Gender Equality Plan for the Medical University of Silesia
The Gender Equality Strategy defines the scopes of action for the European Commission (EC) in all areas of European Union policy. The European Commission has decided to support actions for gender equality through financial instruments, including: Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe (2021-2027). The precondition for applying for financial support is that all public entities, scientific units and universities have an implemented Gender Equality Plan (GEP).
On October 21, 2022 The Gender Equality Plan of the Medical University of Silesia was adopted by Regulation No. 160/2022.
The Gender Equality Plan for SUM was prepared by the appointed by the Rector Team, in cooperation with the employees of the administrative department and received a positive opinion of the Vice-Rector for Studies and Students, the Chairwoman of the Gender Equality Team and Prof. dr hab. n. med. Violetta Skrzypulec-Plinta - Member of the Gender Equality Team - expert in the field of gender inequality.
The accreditations granted by the Director of Postgraduate Medical Education Centre.
Medical University of Silesia was placed in the register of units eligible for conducting majors in areas pursued by laboratory diagnosticians by the Director of Postgraduate Medical Education Centre. The majors are as follows:
- medical laboratory diagnostics – 123 training placements;
- medical laboratory hematology – 24 training placements;
- medical laboratory transfusiology – 78 training placements;
- medical laboratory genetics – 18 training placements;
- medical microbiology – 42 training placements;
The University provides - by far - the largest number of training placements for the above-mentioned majors - among other units of this sort in Poland.
In addition, the Director of Postgraduate Medical Education Centre placed the Medical University of Silesia on the list of units permitted to conduct selected majors - pursued by the pharmacists:
- retail pharmacy – 108 training placements;
- clinical pharmacy – 14 training placements;
APHEA – Agency for Public Health Education Accreditation
The process of obtaining international accreditation from APHEA for the public health studies conducted by the Faculty of Health Sciences in Bytom of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice has been successfully completed. APHEA is an European institution providing accreditation to academic centres conducting studies in the field of public health, and the Faculty of Health Sciences in Bytom received this award as first in Poland. The accreditation means that people undertaking public health studies at SUM in Katowice, receive a guarantee that both the study programme and its implementation complies with the highest international educational standards, and that degree certificate is as prestigious as such certificate from other best universities in the world educating in this field.
APHEA accreditation was awarded in 2020 for six years with the possibility of renewal.
The application procedure for APHEA accreditation was implemented as part of the agreement concluded with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in Warsaw. This project was co-financed by the European Social Fund under the Operational Programme: Knowledge Education Development (a conceptual out-of-competition project entitled Foreign Accreditation within the framework of the measure specified in the project application No. POWR.03.03.00-00-P004/16).
ASPHER – Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region
The Faculty of Public Health in Bytom of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice was accepted into the ranks of the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER) in 2014.
ASPHER is a prestigious organisation that brings together the best entities in Europe delivering public health education. The Association's main objective is to strengthen the role of public health in European countries by improving and developing uniform training standards for specialists in this field - for practical and research purposes. Founded in 1966, the Association now has more than 100 institutional members from the WHO European Region area. It is represented in 42 European countries by institutions employing more than 5,000 scientists and public health experts. It is also part of a cooperative network with similar associations in other regions of the world, as well as with other institutions in the area of public health, working closely with the World Health Organisation and the European Public Health Association, among others.
For Faculty members, joining ASPHER means great opportunities to establish scientific contacts with research units from other countries and to engage in new projects. For the students of the Faculty of Public Health, it is primarily a guarantee of the highest educational standards and access to a study programme in line with the latest European trends. Students also gain the opportunity to participate in numerous activities organised by ASPHER and its partners, including scientific conferences, summer schools and the possibility of publishing their work in scientific journals with international scope.
Accreditation Certificate for the Analytical Laboratory of the Department of Environmental Health
The Polish Centre for Accreditation awarded the Accreditation Certificate to the Analytical Laboratory of the Department of Environmental Health of the Faculty of Public Health in Bytom of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice on 17 June 2019. The accredited activities concern chemical tests of soil and food (vegetables and their preserves, fish and fish preserves, seafood and their preserves). The Accreditation Certificate is valid until 16 June 2023.
SWEET grant
Since 2018, the team of the Department of Paediatric Diabetology of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice, led by Prof. Przemysława Jarosz-Chobot, MD, PhD, has been participating in the prestigious international SWEET project. This is the acronym for an EU grant implemented in the years 2008-2011, entitled: "Better Control in Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes Working To Create Centres Of Reference". The project aims to improve secondary prevention, diagnosis and control of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents by supporting the development of reference centres. The project's mission is to reduce inequalities in access to medical care for the children, while maintaining its high quality and continuously improving it. The Department of Paediatric Diabetes is annually certified as a Centre of Reference for Paediatric Diabetes 2020/2021 by the SWEET group - Pediatric Diabetes Working To Create Centres Of Reference, International Diabetes Federation Europe (IDF-Europe), International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) - as a recognition of the work of the entire team and the high quality of specialised diabetes care.
HR EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH LOGO
In August 2017, the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice joined the elite group of institutions that have obtained the HR Excellence in Research Logo, awarded by the European Commission to institutions conducting research and development activities. The Logo is a confirmation that SUM is an institution that adheres to the provisions of the ''European Charter for Researchers'' and the ''Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers'', whose principles ensure a friendly scientific work environment and transparent rules for the recruitment of researchers.
Magna Charta Observatory
Since 2018 the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice has been a member of Magna Charta Observatory - an association that works to ensure the integrity of intellectual and scientific work in institutions and society, thereby strengthening trust in the relationship between universities and their local, regional, national or global communities, through the implementation of the principles contained in Magna Charta Universitatum (http://www.magna-charta.org/resources/files/the-magna-charta/polish). The document formulates the principles of academic freedom and institutional autonomy and is considered by the international university community as a standard in the conduct of members sharing the same academic values and goals.
Medical Board of New York
The Medical University of Silesia in Katowice was accredited by the State of New York in 2001. It provides the basis for SUM medical students to complete part of their clinical training in hospitals and centres located in the State of New York. Students, by taking advantage of the privileges resulting from the accreditation, can also positively influence the further development of their own careers by participating in internships and residency places in renowned state clinical centres.

The Medical University of Silesia in Katowice was accredited by the State of California in 2010. It provides the basis for SUM medical students to complete part of their clinical training in hospitals and centres located in the State of California. Students, by taking advantage of the privileges resulting from the accreditation, can also positively influence the further development of their own careers by participating in internships and residency places in renowned state clinical centres.
Obtaining funding for an investment entitled 'Evaluating the effectiveness of an innovative model for first comprehensive MS centre in Poland'
As part of the application for investment related to activities on 1 June 2020. The Ministry of Science and Higher Education has awarded funding of 11,795,500 PLN to the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice for an investment entitled 'Evaluating the effectiveness of an innovative model for first comprehensive MS patients' centre in Poland'. The project, prepared by the Department and Clinic of Neurology at the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Zabrze, will be carried out in collaboration with the Independent Public Clinical Hospital No. 1 Prof. Stanisław Szyszko SUM in Katowice, located in Zabrze. The aim of the project is to create Poland's first integrated and comprehensive centre for multiple sclerosis patients, which will have research and scientific as well as diagnostic and therapeutic functions.
