The Metropolitan Science Support Fund is a proprietary grant programme of the Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolis (GZM) to support universities operating in the GZM area.
In total, from 2022 to 2024, the GZM intends to allocate more than PLN 6 million to support universities.
Higher education institutions located within the boundaries of the GZM can apply for the grants. Five thematic areas are available to them:
Area 1: World-class academics in the metropolis
In the first area it is possible to obtain funding for projects in which lecturers from the world's top-ranked universities in the world or winners of significant awards on a global scale or personalities in the artistic world will give classes and other activities at the universities of the GZM. In the case of art colleges, the invited person does not have to represent a university.
Allocation of funds: PLN 3,300,000
Level of co-financing: between 60 and 99% of eligible costs.
Thematic area 2: Support for research
In the second area it is possible to obtain the co-financing of:
- projects involving research necessary for the process of obtaining a doctoral degree, at universities located within the boundaries of the GZM;
- scientific and research projects, carried out by researchers at the doctoral level.
Allocation of funds: PLN 1,000,000
Funding level: 90% of eligible costs
Area 3: Innovative education methods
The third area provides co-financing for projects consisting in the implementation of innovative (on a university scale) educational programmes addressed to university students, including in particular programmes focused on: the active involvement of external partners (in particular public institutions, other universities, non-governmental organisations, the business sector); programmes implemented in cooperation with the socio-economic environment of the university in order to develop innovative products and standards for universal services, as well as programmes deepening the possibility of practical education / education in action.

Funding level: 90% of eligible costs
Area 4: Competitions and scientific events
The fourth area provides co-financing for projects involving the participation of students, scientific circles, operating at universities in national and international events of a scientific competition nature, as well as the organisation of such events in the GZM area.
Allocation of funds: PLN 500,000
Funding level: 90% of eligible costs
Area 5: Study in the Metropolis
Within the fifth area it is possible to obtain funding for projects involving:
- creation by universities of individual study programmes for first-year students who are laureates of subject olympiads as well as art and sports competitions in secondary schools, in order to take up studies at universities located in the area of the GZM;
- Undertaking, by higher education institutions located within the boundaries of the GZM, scientific initiatives, addressed to secondary school students from the area of the GZM, encouraging them to undertake further education in the area of the Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolis, with the exception of courses preparing for the baccalaureate and other state and international examinations.
