Doctoral school

The Doctoral School of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice educates doctoral students and prepares them for the doctoral degree in medical and health sciences in the following disciplines:

  • medical sciences,
  • pharmaceutical sciences,
  • health sciences.

Training at the Doctoral School is free of charge, takes place in full-time form and lasts 4 years. At the same time, one can be a doctoral student in only one doctoral school.

Admission to the Doctoral School takes place as a result of a competition and inclusion in the list of doctoral students.

A doctoral student is entitled to a doctoral scholarship, the scientific supervision of an assistant promoter/promoter, the use of equipment, scientific and research apparatus, scientific internships, support in the preparation of grant proposals and other forms of scientific activity.

Up to three months from the date of commencement of training, the doctoral student is assigned a promoter or promoters.

Implementation of training is based on the Training Program and Individual Research Plan, which includes, in particular, a schedule for the preparation of the doctoral dissertation developed by the doctoral student in consultation with the Promoter up to twelve months from the date of commencement of training. Implementation of the Individual Research Plan is subject to a mid-term evaluation in the middle of the training period.

The evaluation is carried out by a three-person Commission, which includes at least one person from outside SUM who holds a postdoctoral degree or professor title in the discipline in which the doctoral dissertation is being prepared. The mid-term evaluation ends with a positive or negative result.

The Director of the Doctoral School of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice for the term 2020-2024 is Prof. Agata Stanek, MD. Administrative support for the Director is provided by the Doctoral School Section, which is part of the Center for Science and International Cooperation.

The opinion and advisory body of the Director is the Council of the Doctoral School, which consists of four persons holding a postdoctoral degree or professor title and three representatives of doctoral students of the Doctoral School from each discipline in which education is conducted at SUM.

Doctoral students who began their doctoral studies before 2019/2020 continue their studies under the current rules until the end of 2023.
