Courses and training

The Medical University of Silesia in Katowice (SUM) conducts specialization training for doctors and specialization courses addressed to doctors and dentists during specialization education. 

The university has been entered on the list of accredited units and is authorized to conduct specialist training for doctors and dentists in the field of: 

  • forensic medicine (Department of Forensic Medicine and Forensic Toxicology, Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice, SUM),
  • pathomorphology (Department of Pathomorphology and Molecular Diagnostics, Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice, SUM),
  • medical microbiology (Department of Medical Microbiology, Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice, SUM).
The University's organizational units conduct specialization and improving courses in a given calendar year addressed to doctors and dentists during specialization education in many fields e.g. in neurology, cardiosurgery, cardiology, dermatology and venereology, gynecology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology and neonatology.

The university is also accredited to conduct training courses in pharmacy for pharmacists and accreditations in the following specializations addressed to laboratory diagnosticians:

  • laboratory medical diagnostics
  • laboratory medical hematology
  • laboratory medical transfusiology
  • laboratory medical genetics
  • medical microbiology

The university has the largest number of training places in the specializations listed above among all accredited units in Poland.

The university also conducts, as part of European funds and taking into account maps of health needs, training to improve surgical skills. Their goal is to develop professional competences and qualifications of doctors and resident doctors in response to the epidemiological and demographic needs of the country.

The university is the organizer of many other trainings and courses that respond to the needs of the market. In 2021, practical training was prepared for physiotherapists, pharmacists and laboratory diagnosticians on the principles of performing protective vaccinations against COVID-19 and for medical personnel from oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilation of patients with respiratory failure due to COVID-19. In addition, the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice annually conducts training in the field of medical rescue as part of a postgraduate internship for doctors and dentists.
