Wondering what cantharides or perpetual pills are? Do you want to learn about the history of medicine and pharmacy? Or maybe you like time travel? If so, visit the Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice. It is the first and only facility in the Silesian Voivodeship that maintains the memory of and popularises knowledge about the achievements of many generations of doctors and pharmacists. It is not only a teaching aid for students, but is also intended to serve education in the broadest sense.
In the Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy, located on the premises of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Sosnowiec (Student House No. 2 at 30 Ostrogórska Street), as many as eight exhibition rooms and over 800 exhibits dating mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries await visitors. Among the treasures to be found here are beautiful collector's pharmacy vessels made of uranium glass, a Berliner-type microscope dating from around 1900, a unique lung-heart apparatus remembering the times of the legend of Silesian cardiac surgery, Professor Zbigniew Religa, or a pharmacy recipe book dated 1848, which looks like a real book of magic.
Two multimedia seminar rooms have been set up to accommodate students visiting the museum exhibition and participating in workshops, as well as students taking classes.
The official opening of the museum took place on 12 December 2018. With this, the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice joined the ranks of Polish medical universities that have such a special unit in their structure.

SUM students are admitted free of charge upon presentation of a valid student ID card.
