Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice (former name: School of Medicine in Katowice) was founded pursuant to Regulation of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of June 16, 1975. Based on this Regulation the School of Medicine of the Medical Academy of Silesia was restructured and two separate schools were established: School of Medicine in Katowice and School of Medicine in Zabrze. In the same year first admission to the medical study program was processed.

  • Professor Barbara Zahorska-Markiewicz, MD, PhD (1990-1996),
  • Jan Duława, MD, PhD (1996-2002),
  • Professor Ewa Małecka-Tendera, MD, PhD (2002-2005),
  • Professor Joanna Lewin-Kowalik, MD, PhD (2005-2012),
  • Professor Jan E. Zejda, MD, PhD (2012-2019).
Currently Professor Tomasz Francuz, MD, PhD is the Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice.

The Faculty offers medical study program as well as second-degree studies in the field of neurobiology. Since 1996 students can also seek admission to English language medical program and graduates from this program are offered the opportunity to attend the annual post-graduate internship training. Apart from this, the Faculty educational offer includes post-graduate studies in the field of neurological speech therapy.

The Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice consists of 50 units and departments located in basic science and clinical facilities. In addition, based on numerous affiliation agreements made with foreign hospitals and medical centers students have a unique possibility to pursue a part of their medical education in USA and in Israel. The Experimental Medicine Centre was incorporated into the structure of the Faculty as an experimental and breeding unit. Students and employees can also take advantage from a modern Education and Medical Simulation Centre which operates from year 2012 and was established as the first university facility of this kind in Poland.

Professional qualifications and competencies of Faculty members along with their substantial academic achievements and scientific experience, as well as high quality of teaching and research infrastructure have a continued influence on current Faculty image. Its high position is also strengthened by a wide range of modern services and medical procedures performed with significant activity in health care, supported by numerous and unquestionable worldwide accomplishments of Faculty members.
