Science

The Medical University of Silesia in Katowice actively participates in development of science by establishing and disseminating modern diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, promoting innovative solutions in medicine and creating patient-friendly conditions for health care. The development of the University is based on a modern scientific and didactic base, a wide selection of fields of study and specialisations,  education of doctoral students and a highly specialised staff of academic teachers. 

The established research teams carry out work with a very broad range of topics in the disciplines of medical, health and pharmaceutical sciences. All scientific concepts undertaken by SUM are in line with current global trends set in research, whose primary objective is to solve the most important medical, social and many other problems. By aiming to maintain the world level of its research, responding to the constantly changing epidemic situation and emerging global problems, The SUM has set priority research directions:

  • Civilization diseases, in particular cancer (including learning about the mechanisms of civilisation diseases).
  • Medical, psychological and social aspects of ageing processes.
  • Concepts for new diagnostics and treatments (including new medicines and prevention of new non-communicable, infectious and chronic diseases, e.g. cardiovascular diseases, cancer, kidney diseases, COVID-19).
  • Regenerative medicine (e.g. stem cells, tissue engineering).
  • Emerging technologies in medicine, including new medicines and treatment concepts for infections with drug-resistant pathogens.
  • Rare diseases.
