About

The Faculty of Health Sciences in Bytom was established by the resolution of the Senate of the Silesian Medical Academy (currently the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice) of March 28, 2001. The responsible task of organizing the new faculty was entrusted to professor Jan E. Zejda, MD, PhD, who in the years 2002-2005 also held the position of the first dean. The newly established unit was officially inaugurated on October 1, 2002, offering education in the field of public health in three specialties - dietetics, emergency medicine and public health.

Over the past 20 years, the faculty has undergone significant changes, and their direction was determined by subsequent deans. This function was performed by:

  • Krystyn Sosada, MD, PhD (2005),
  • professor Małgorzata Muc-Wierzgoń, MD, PhD (2005–2012),
  • professor Elżbieta Grochowska-Niedworok, MD, PhD (2012–2020).

In 2020, the responsibility for managing the further development of the faculty was entrusted to professor Sebastian Grosicki, MD, PhD and vice-deans - Joanna Głogowska-Ligus, MD, PhD and professor Grzegorz Dziubanek, MD, PhD (Vice Dean for Student Affairs).

The past two decades have also been a period of dynamic expansion of the educational offer, which gives candidates for studies the opportunity to choose education in one of five fields of study:

  •     occupational health and safety
  • dietetics
  • medical coordinator
  • health risk management
  • public health

The Faculty also offers the opportunity to improve competence thanks to a wide range of postgraduate studies in the following fields:

  • clinical research in medicine
  • medical coder
  • health promotion and health education
  • environmental health risk factors
  • health care management

Undoubtedly, the faculty's card is its seat. From the beginning of its activity, it was located in a historic building, located in the centre of Bytom at 18 Piekarska Street, whose history dates back to 1894. Designed by Paul Jackisch, the building also served educational purposes in the past, being first the seat of the Secondary Catholic Girls' School, run by the School Sisters de Notre Dame, and after World War II, the State Gymnasium and High School for Girls and the Medical School Complex. Since 2002, the building has been the main seat of the faculty and, together with the building of the Department of Dietetics in Zabrze Rokitnica, is a modern and comfortable scientific and didactic base.
