Establishment of a medical academy in Bytom

1948 - 1952

March 20, 1948 - by decree of the Council of Ministers, the Academy of Medicine in Bytom, the eighth higher medical school in Poland, was established.

June 8, 1948 - by decree of the President of the Republic, the first authorities of the Academy were appointed.

September 3-20, 1948 - the first entrance examinations were held, 231 candidates were admitted, including 96 to the Dental Department

October 1949 - by decree of the Council of Ministers, the name of the Academy was changed to: "Silesian Ludwik Waryński Academy of Medicine in Bytom".

January 7, 1950 - by an order of the Ministry of Health, the first clinical hospital of the Medical Academy - the State Clinical Hospital No. 1 - was established on the basis of the Social Insurance Institution Hospital in Zabrze at 13/15 3 Maja Street.

1952 - the first year of students of the Dental Department graduated.

1953 - 1957

December 1953 - The first graduating class of medical students at SMA received their medical diploma

October 1957 - Professor Witold Zahorski, M.D., became the rector of SAM, and began the process of consolidating the University in Katowice and building an academic center in Katowice-Ligota.

A decision is made to expand - location: Katowice Ligota

1958 - 1962

January 1957 - A commission of the Ministry of Health approved a plan to locate the Academy in Katowice. It envisaged the construction in Katowice-Ligota of a clinical complex, medical theory facilities and two student residences.

June 30, 1957 - The Provincial National Council in Katowice passed Resolution No. 9/58 on the establishment of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the Medical Academy.

October 11, 1960 - Prof. zw. dr. hab. Brunon Nowakowski, organizer and first rector of ŚAM received the first honorary doctorate in the history of the University.

Poland's first kidney transplant

1963 - 1967

1964 - On the initiative of Dr. Bożena Hager-Małecka, the Provincial Children's Cardiac Rehabilitation Center in Murcki and the Provincial Children's Psychiatry Center in Zbrosławice were established.

September 1966 - Prof. Jozef Gasinski performed the first kidney transplant from a living donor in Poland (he performed three such transplants in the same year).

Silesian heart-lung and the first pacemaker in Silesia

1968 - 1972

1969 - The "Silesian lung-heart", constructed by Dr. Zygmunt Antoszewski, M.D., in cooperation with the Silesian University of Technology, was approved for use. The apparatus made it possible to perform open-heart procedures in extracorporeal circulation.

1969 - Prof. Hózef Gasinski together with a team led by Leszek Giec, MD, performed the first implantation of a pacemaker in Silesia.

May 26, 1971 - by an order of the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, the Faculty of Pharmacy was established at the SMA

August 23, 1971 - by decree of the Council of Ministers, the seat of the L. Waryński Silesian Medical Academy became the city of Katowice.

March 1972 - the first corneal transplant in Poland was performed at the Department of Ophthalmology in Katowice.

Central Clinical Hospital in Katowice-Ligota begins operations

1973 - 1977

October 1, 1973 - the head office of the Pharmaceutical Department was moved from Zabrze-Rokitnica to Sosnowiec at 4 Jagiellońska St.

December 20, 1973 - by order of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Central Clinical Hospital in Katowice-Ligota was established. The first director of the hospital was Dr. Zbigniew Kalina, MD.

July 12, 1974 - by an order of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Faculty of Nursing of the Polish Academy of Sciences was established with its headquarters in Katowice-Ligota - the second such institution in Poland after the one in Lublin. The first dean was doc. dr. n. med. Stanislaw Tokarz.

June 1975 - the second Faculty of Medicine in Katowice was launched at the SAM, established as a result of the division of the previous Faculty of Medicine with the Faculty of Dentistry. Associate Professor Marek Machalski, MD, became the first dean.

December 1, 1976 - A ceremony was held to award master's degrees to the first 40 graduates of the Faculty of Pharmacy at SAM.

ŚAM issued ten-thousandth graduation diploma

1978 - 1982

September 1978 - Prof. Boleslaw Gwóźdź and Mieczyslaw Krause constructed a walking learning apparatus for patients with hemiplegia.

December 1979 - ŚAM issued the 10,000th graduation diploma.

1980 - In the First Department of Cardiology in Katowice-Ochojec, the use of diagnostics and invasive therapy began, in cooperation with cardiac and vascular surgeons. As the first in Silesia, the Clinic introduced cardiac electrotherapy.

May 1981 - the democratic University Electoral College elected the authorities: the first-ever rector-elect of the Medical University of Silesia was Prof. Zbigniew S. Herman, MD.

First successful heart transplant surgery

1983 - 1987

Year 1984 - Percutaneous coronary artery bypass grafting was introduced in the 4th Department of Cardiac Surgery in Zabrze.

Year 1984 - the team of the Department of Bromatology of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the SMA, under the direction of Associate Professor Wieslaw Chorazzi, together with employees of the Bochnia Salt Mine, developed and introduced into production the preparation Kolasol, which treats wounds, burns and sores. The first batch of the drug was directed to hospitals treating burns.

November 1985 - Associate Professor Zbigniew Religa, MD, together with a team of surgeons from the Department of Cardiac Surgery in Zabrze, performed the first successful, and second in the history of Polish medicine, heart transplantation procedure.

July 6, 1986 - the Silesian Center for Pediatrics at the Medical University of America was established, with Prof. Bożena Hager-Małecka as its director, introducing innovative treatment methods to ensure that children receive constant medical care and a shorter hospital stay.

December 1986 - the Upper Silesian Cardiology Center was opened in Katowice-Ochojec, organized by Prof. Leszek Giec, MD.

1987 - Poland's second successful liver transplant was performed in the 4th Department of General and Vascular Surgery in Zabrze.

Poland's first heart transplantation in a child

1988 - 1992

April 1988 - the first heart transplantation in a child in Poland was performed in the Department of Pediatric Cardiology in Zabrze.

February 5, 1990 - Clinical Hospital No. 5 of the AAM was put into operation, where ophthalmology clinics were located.

March 1990 - by a resolution of the Senate of the SMA, the name of the University was established: Silesian Medical Academy in Katowice.

1991 - Prof. Kornel Gibinski was the first to be honored with the highest decoration of the Polish Medical Society "Gloria Medicinae". In the same year, this decoration was also awarded to Prof. Franciszek Kokot and Zbigniew Religa.

First allogeneic bone marrow transplant in Poland

1993 - 1997

February 1995 - on the initiative of Rector Władysław Pierzchała, the Diagnostic Center for Women's Health in Katowice-Ligota was established as the first Non-Public Health Care Institution in Poland, which was founded by a university.

January 1, 1996 - The Minister of Health established Clinical Hospital No. 6 - Upper Silesian Center for Child and Mother Health in Katowice-Ligota. Among other things, the first computed tomography laboratory in Silesia equipped with a Siemens system was established.

February 1997 - in the Department of Hematology in Katowice, the first allogeneic bone marrow transplant in Poland was performed under the leadership of Prof. Jerzy Holowiecki.

Diplomas for first graduates of medical studies conducted in English language

1998 - 2002

1998 - Prof. Marian Zembala joined the single lung transplantation program, giving rise to a new field of lung transplantation previously unknown in Poland.

June 2000 - on the basis of the Upper Silesian Medical Center in Katowice-Ochojec, the Clinical Hospital No. 7 of the Medical Academy was established.

February 1, 2001 - in the Department of Neurosurgery of the Department of Pediatric Surgery, in cooperation with the Department of Neurology of the Developmental Age, the first operation on drug-resistant epilepsy in Silesia was carried out.

June 19, 2001 - at the Faculty of Medicine in Katowice, during a ceremony in the Prof. Jerzy Szaflarski Hall, the first graduates of medical studies conducted in English received their diplomas.

October 30, 2001 - a team of cardiac surgeons from the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze, under the direction of Prof. Marian Zembala, performed a unique in the country operation of simultaneous heart and lung transplantation.

December 2001 - the A3 lecture hall and the dean's office of the newly established Faculty of Health Care and Education of the Medical University of Katowice-Ligota were opened.

July 18, 2002 - at the Upper Silesian Center for Child and Mother Health in Katowice-Ligota, the first vagus nerve implantation surgery in Silesia was performed on a 12-year-old girl suffering from epilepsy. The team of doctors was led by Dr. Marek Madera, assistant professor at the Department of Pediatric Surgery.

August 30, 2002 - at the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze, two teams, cardiac surgery and nephrology, successfully performed the first simultaneous heart and kidney transplantation in Poland.

The Polish parliament has passed a resolution: The Silesian Medical Academy becomes the Silesian Medical University in Katowice.

2003 - 2007

April 25, 2003 - The first successful single lung transplant operation was performed, The operation was carried out by cardiac surgeons Prof. Marian Zembala and Dr. Roman Przybylski and thoracic surgeon Dr. Damian Czyzewski.

January 30-31, 2004 - In the Department of Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation of the Medical University of Katowice, three patients underwent bone marrow transplants simultaneously. Sourced from unrelated donors, the marrow was delivered from clinics in the UK, France and Germany.

April 6, 2004 - at the Department of General, Vascular and Transplant Surgery of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Katowice, a team of surgeons led by Professor Lech Cierpka performed the first simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant operation in Silesia.

February 7, 2005 - in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Medical University of ŚAM in Bytom, an innovative operation was performed to remove a meningo-spinal hernia in a 7-month-old fetus in the womb. The operation was performed by a team of doctors led by Anita Olejek, MD, and Prof. Janusz Bohosiewicz. The baby was born on March 18.

October 16, 2005 - the first successful liver transplant in Silesia was performed at the Department of General, Vascular and Transplant Surgery of the Medical University of Katowice, headed by Prof. Dr. Lech Cierpka.

November 22, 2005 - Doctors at the Department of Neurosurgery of the Medical University of Katowice-Ligota, headed by Prof. Dr. Piotr Bazowski, performed the first implantation of a brain simulator.

March 30, 2006 - The Sejm of the Republic of Poland passed a law to name the Ludwik Waryński Medical University of Silesia in Katowice "Silesian Medical University in Katowice."

Decision is made to build a modern Center for Medical Didactics and Simulation

2008 - 2012

June 13-14, 2008 - SUM's rector, Prof. Ewa Małecka-Tendera, PhD, was elected chairwoman of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Medical Universities for the 2008-2012 term during the KRAUM Presidium meeting in Bydgoszcz.

July 13, 2008 - the first heart transplantation in Poland in an infant was performed in the Department of Surgery and Transplantation in Zabrze (operators: Roman Przybylski, MD, PhD, and Jacek Pajak, MD, PhD).

November 26, 2008 - a pioneering procedure of transapical minimally invasive implantation of an artificial aortic valve (biological) was carried out in the Department of Surgery and Transplantology in Zabrze. The new method did not require cardiac arrest or opening of the chest.

December 22, 2008 - Doctors from the Department of Cardiology, Congenital Heart Defects and Electrotherapy in Zabrze and the 3rd Department of Cardiology Clinical Division, were the first in Poland to perform aortic valve replacement through the femoral artery.

January 9, 2009 - in the Department of Congenital Heart Defects and Pediatric Cardiology of the SUM in Zabrze, the first in Silesia and the second in Poland to perform a pulmonary valve implantation without opening the chest (operators Małgorzata Szkutnik, MD, and Jacek Kusy, MD, PhD).

January 27, 2010 - SUM's Vice-Chancellor for Clinical Affairs Prof. Przemysław Jałowiecki signed an agreement with the Information Processing Center for financing, as part of Priority XIII of the Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment, of the construction of the Center for Didactics and Medical Simulation in Katowice-Ligota.

October 26, 2010 - laying of the cornerstone for the construction of the campus of the Faculty of Pharmacy with the Department of Laboratory Medicine.

February 26, 2011 - SUM trainees achieved the highest pass rate in the country for the Medical State Examination.

September 24, 2012 - the grand opening of the Center for Didactics and Medical Simulation was held.

SUM receives prestigious HR logo

2013 - 2017

January 7, 2013 - the grand opening of the new premises of the SUM Main Library took place. The book collection is more than 140 thousand volumes of books and more than 30 thousand volumes of scientific journals. More than 30 electronic databases related to medicine and related sciences are available.

January 9, 2014 - a Gamma Knife procedure was performed at the University Ophthalmology and Oncology Center on the youngest patient in Poland.

2015 - The Patent Office of the Republic of Poland approved two inventions that were created with the participation of Prof. Jacek Kasperski, MD, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Medicine with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry in Zabrze, head of the Department of Prosthodontics and Dental Materials Science at SUM.

March 1, 2016 - Two hospitals of the Silesian Medical University in Katowice: University Ophthalmology and Oncology Center and SP Central Clinical Hospital of Prof. K. Gibinski in Katowice merged to form the Prof. K. Gibinski University Clinical Center of the Silesian Medical University in Katowice.

On the threshold of the new academic year, the Silesian Medical University in Katowice is changing its image. Both the University's coat of arms and logo have been modified, with a simple, modern look.

The Prof. K. Gibinski University Clinical Center of the Silesian Medical University in Katowice has a new magnetic resonance imaging laboratory with the newest magnetic resonance imaging equipment in Poland.

Vagus nerve stimulators were implanted in the first two patients by doctors at Clinical Hospital No. 7 of the Silesian Medical University - Upper Silesian Medical Center (GCM) in Katowice.

March 15, 2017 - At the Ophthalmology Clinical Department of the Faculty of Medicine with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry in Zabrze of the Silesian Medical University, located at the Railway Hospital in Katowice, a team led by Professor Edward Wylęgała, MD, performed the first ultrasound ciliary body plasty ( UCP) procedures in Poland.

The globally unique procedure, which seals the perforation of the left ventricle's free wall and percutaneously treats severe mitral valve insufficiency, was performed by cardiologists at SPSK No. 7 of the Silesian Medical University in Katowice's Prof. L. Giec Upper Silesian Medical Center.

The Medical University of Silesia in Katowice has joined the elite group of institutions that have received the prestigious HR Excellence in Research Logo, awarded by the European Commission to institutions engaged in research and development activities.

Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, was included in the Academic Space Network

2018 - 2022
12 December 2022. - 21 universities from all over Poland, including the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, have joined the Academic Space Network. The aim of this venture is, among other things, to jointly plan, carry out scientific research and research and development work in the area of space technology and fields related to space exploration and exploration.
