The Department of Ophthalmology of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice has received funding in the amount of PLN 2,969,480 as part of the SONATA 19 grant from the National Centre of Science for research into new treatments for hereditary retinal dystrophies.

The project will be carried out at the Translational Research in Ophthalmology Laboratory of the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Katowice, with the acronym ProteoRetina 2.0 and the title 'Modulation of protein interaction networks as a new therapeutic target for the treatment of hereditary retinal dystrophies in an animal model'.

It is worth mentioning that the initiator and coordinator of the project is Adrian Smędowski, MD, PhD, Professor SUM, from the Department of Ophthalmology, WNMK, while proteomics expert Xiaonan Liu, MD, PhD, is the project manager.

SONATA is a competition for research projects carried out by researchers between 2 and 7 years after receiving their PhD.

Retinal dystrophies are a heterogeneous group of inherited diseases that lead to progressive, severe and irreversible vision loss by altering the anatomy and/or function of the retina. There is currently no causal treatment, but research is underway to find new therapies using gene and cell therapies.

A description of the project can be found at: projekty.ncn.gov.pl/...

The Laboratory of Translational Research in Ophthalmology of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice is a unit specialised in conducting research in experimental ophthalmology and designing new ophthalmic therapies, especially gene therapies. Thanks to an extensive network of international collaborations, projects are conducted in the field of molecular mechanisms of optic nerve neuropathies, especially glaucoma, retinal dystrophy, ischaemic retinopathy, myopia and experimental therapies for eye diseases.

Congratulations.
