The 23rd edition of the Students International Surgical Conference was inaugurated last Friday in Ustroń. The symposium was attended by medical students (mainly nursing and medical faculty), young trainee and resident physicians and distinguished professors from all over Poland. On behalf of the Authorities of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, the participants of the event were welcomed by the University's Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs, Damian Czyzewski, MD, Prof. SUM.
SISC 2023 was organized by the Student Scientific Circle at the Department of General, Colorectal and Multiorgan Trauma Clinical Surgery of SUM and the SUM Student Scientific Society.
Three scientific sessions were held over two days and participants presented a total of 22 scientific papers. The Conference Scientific Committee, which evaluated the presentations of students and young doctors, included more than a dozen distinguished specialists. Thanks to this experience, the presenters were able to learn how to present their scientific achievements and improve their methodological skills.
One of the members of the distinguished Scientific Committee participating in the event was Prof. Zbigniew Lorenc, who also gave the opening lecture entitled. "Anastomotic leakage in colorectal surgery. How to diagnose? How to treat?". SISC 2023 attendees also had the opportunity to hear two other lectures:
- "Where a surgeon can't/shouldn't, a nurse can/should send! An interdisciplinary dream team in wound care.", prepared by Ms. Aneta Zymon, a wound care specialist;
- "From Amazon to Angelina Jolie," prepared by Dr. Pawel Kabata, a specialist in general and oncological surgery.
In addition, the event's participants were treated to interesting workshops, including on cardiac surgery, wound treatment and intestinal stoma care.
The culmination of the SISC 2023 conference in Ustroń was the announcement of the results and presentation of awards to the winners.
