The Voivodeship Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Katowice has signed an agreement with the University of Silesia for a subsidy and a loan to be granted for the following task ‘Carrying out a technical design for a steam/water heat exchange station together with relocating the central heat exchange station to the gas boiler room at ul. Medyków 2A and redesigning the heat network - carrying out construction and installation work’.

Thanks to the Fund's support of a PLN 500,000.00 grant and a PLN 4,798,542.72 loan, the Silesian Medical University in Katowice will implement an ambitious project to modernise its heating infrastructure. The work is being carried out at the ŚUM campus in Katowice-Ligota and involves the decommissioning of an existing energy-intensive heat substation and the construction of a modern and environmentally-friendly new heat substation. The task also includes the comprehensive modernisation of a section of the district heating network, which will contribute to reducing heat energy losses and, consequently, to climate protection in the broadest sense.

Mateusz Pindel, President of the Board of the WFOŚiGW in Katowice, emphasised the importance of cooperation with universities in the field of environmental protection: -Investments by universities, such as the Silesian Medical University, play a key role in promoting modern energy solutions and environmental protection. Cooperation with the academic sector is extremely important to us, as universities have a huge impact on shaping the environmental awareness of future generations. Modernising the heating infrastructure will not only improve energy efficiency, but also contribute to sustainable energy management, reducing the negative impact on the environment. We are proud to support such initiatives.

The total cost of the task is PLN 5,887,269.69, of which the Silesian Medical University in Katowice is covering the amount of PLN 588,726.97 from its own resources.

- Our cooperation with the WFOŚIGW is extremely important for pro-environmental reasons, because as a University we want to develop this type of investment and intensify our environmental protection activities, which is also the mission of the Medical University. We have a proven partner in the Fund. I firmly believe that further activities are ahead of us,’ stated the JM Rector of the ŚUM, Prof. Tomasz Szczepański.

As assessed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of ŚUM for Investment and Administrative-Technical Affairs, Eng. Sławomir Rozmarynowski: ‘Taking concrete steps will translate into real and quantifiable environmental benefits, including above all a reduction in the amount of dust and gases emitted into the atmosphere - which is tantamount to achieving cleaner air for the residents of Katowice. Thanks to the possibility of realising the investment, ŚUM in Katowice has applied to the President of the Energy Regulatory Office for an energy efficiency certificate, i.e. for the so-called White Certificates.

This project is part of the University's long-term goals to promote an environmentally friendly attitude among the entire academic community.
