On Wednesday, April 19, a lecture panel on providing medical aid on the battlefield was held at the Medical Simulation Center in Zabrze. The class, prepared by instructors from the Special Forces Training Center, the 2nd Search and Rescue Group and the Katowice Provincial Ambulance Service, among others, was attended by students of the Zabrze Faculty of Medical Sciences. On the second day (April 20), the classes were held at a military training ground.

This is the first such class to be held on the grounds of a military unit. Thanks to the agreement signed between the University and the CSWS, our students can learn the principles of providing effective aid in field conditions. Admittedly, we already have such a subject in our offer, but until now classes in it were held only on the premises of the Medical Simulation Center in Zabrze. Now we are going a step further," said Professor Jerzy Stojko, MD, Vice-Rector for Studies and Students of SUM, who also added: - We are currently preparing a full program of optional classes. We want as many students as possible to take advantage of them.

We are building some awareness of the potential dangers that our students may face in the future. It's not just about providing assistance when war breaks out, but also about making them aware that elements of tactical medicine are increasingly being used in civilian rescue. It's all sorts of terrorist attacks, natural disasters and other dangerous situations that they may one day have to deal with," said Tomasz Lemm, head of the Medical Simulation Center in Zabrze.

The event was also attended by Col. Maj. Wojciech Smoluch, Commander of the Special Forces Training Center, who said: - Cooperation with the Silesian Medical University is very important to us. We are here to pass on our knowledge and experience to these young people. We also want to show them one of the paths they can take by going through the whole cycle of preparation and joining the army.

As part of the two-day class, students of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Zabrze learned about the principles of blood transfusion in battlefield conditions, the so-called "Walking Blood Bank," supplying chest injuries and techniques for stopping hemorrhages, among other things. SUM students were also treated to a demonstration of medical assistance and evacuation by M17 helicopter of a casualty of combat operations, organized by specialists from the "AGAT" Military Unit and the Airborne Special Operations Unit.
