At the international congress - Antwerp Medical Student's Congress 2023 - Natalia Hajduga and Katarzyna Jaskiewicz, medical students at the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice, Poland, won first place in an oral presentation of their research results on the effects of the hyperbaric chamber in adjuvant therapy of glioma.

The research was and is conducted in cooperation with the National Cancer Institute (Gliwice Branch), specifically the Department of Radiotherapy and the Centre for Translational Research and Molecular Biology of Tumours. Our students are active in the Scientific Circle at the SUM Department of Pharmacology, supervised by Anna Bielecka-Wajdman, MD, PhD.

The direction of the research concerns the sensitisation of glioma cells to applied first-line treatment (temozolomide and radiotherapy) and the cellular mechanisms responsible for these effects.  - Interestingly, adjuvant therapy in commercial hyperbaric chambers began to be more widely publicised during the treatment of neurological complications following coronavirus infection. However, it may also have a positive effect during oncological treatment as well, but this issue requires research, which our SUM students have just undertaken, says Anna Bielecka-Wajdman, MD, PhD.
