As many as 30 simulation stations await participants in the 30th Symposium of the Endourology and ESWL Section of the Polish Urological Society, which begins tomorrow. This is one of the most important events in the world of medicine, held under the auspices of the Silesian Medical University in Katowice. An important highlight of the program will be three surgical robots on which participants will be able to perform surgery to remove a prostate tumor, which is currently the most common cancer in men. The event will run until June 17, 2023.
- Urology as a surgical surgical field is currently the most "gadgetized" specialty. This "gadgetry" stems from the ability to use a wide range of surgical equipment from endoscopic equipment that allows diagnosis and treatment, for example. through the urethra, minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries, after which the patient quickly returns to activity, to robotic surgery, thanks to which surgery can be associated with a better recovery," says Klaudia Korecka, MD, from the Department of Pediatric Surgery - Department of Pediatric Surgery and Urology, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Katowice, Poland, and adds: - However, surgical advances require specialized training, which is increasingly being done around the world using medical trainers and simulators.
This year's symposium will consist of two parts. The first, on June 16, will take place at the Center for Medical Didactics and Simulation of the Silesian Medical University in Katowice, where workshops will be held on robotic, laparoscopic, endoscopic and biopsy simulators. Among the models on which we will practice the various stages of selected procedures will be mats for learning basic suturing, bladder-urethral anastomosis after radical prostatectomy, and models for performing partial kidney resection (NSS). All procedures will be performed with the assistance of fully equipped robotic, laparoscopic, endoscopic or biopsy kits under the guidance of mentors who perform these surgeries on a daily basis.
In addition, we will create the opportunity to delve into the virtual world through digital simulators, where participants will be able to perform such operations as radical nephrectomy, pelvic-ureteric junction plasty, radical prostatectomy, C-arm-guided renal puncture, RIRS, URSL, rigid and flexible cystoscopy, HoLEP, TURP or TURBT. In turn, participants will have the opportunity to perform flexible ureterorenoscopy (RIRS), TURP and TURBT on endoscopic trainers equipped with special models imitating real tissue.
The second part of the symposium will be devoted to the treatment of kidney stones and will be held at the Vienna House Hotel. It will take the form of discussions between the lecturers. Each of them will present their pre-recorded videos of RIRS and ECIRS procedures. This year we have invited leading endourologists from abroad to give lectures, in addition to specialists from Poland. They will be Prof. Stefania Ferretti (Siena), Dr. Esteban Emiliani (Barcelona) and Dr. Mehmet IIker Gokce (Ankara). In the following sessions, we will discuss complications after endourological procedures and show how modern ureteral stents can help us treat them.
