Prof. Dr. Artur Palasz obtained his doctoral degree in medical biology in 2004 on the basis of a distinguished dissertation entitled. "Activity of the cytochrome P450 complex in the small intestine of the rat at different stages of individual life". He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences in 2017 on the basis of an evaluation of his scientific output and a series of research papers under the collective title: "Antipsychotic drugs as modulators of neuropeptide signalling and neurogenesis in the rat brain".
He has held research appointments at a number of overseas research and teaching centres including Institut de Psychiatrie et Neurosciences, Universite Paris Cite (France), Department of Cell Biology, Universität Salzburg (Austria), Centre for Molecular Biology and Neuroscience, University of Oslo (Norway), Anatomical Neuropharmacology Unit (MRC), Department of Pharmacology and Brasenose College, University of Oxford; at the invitation of Prof. P. Somogyi FRS, FMedSci (UK), Biozentrum, Anatomisches Institut; Universität Basel (Switzerland), Institut fϋr Anatomie & Zellbiologie; Universität Ulm (Germany).
Since 2021, Prof. Artur Palasz, MD, PhD, has been the Head of the Histology Department of the Department of Histology and Embryology at the Silesian Medical University in Katowice. His research interests include primarily neuropsychopharmacology and biochemistry of the brain, with particular emphasis on the action of novel regulatory neuropeptides at the level of the hypothalamus and limbic system, the process of neurogenesis in the mature brain, functional neuroanatomy, the effect of rare earth metals on synaptic transmission and the pathophysiology of nutrition disorders at the neuronal level. He has scientific collaborations with research centres in the UK, Italy, Brazil, Spain, Greece and the Czech Republic.
The scientific output of Prof. Artur Palasz, MD, PhD, consists of 114 peer-reviewed publications with a total Impact Factor: 204.6 and MNiSW score of 4434, Hirsch index: 15, including chapters in the academic textbooks "Clinical Psychopharmacology" (2022), "Child and Adolescent Psychiatry" (2021) and the translation of the Polish edition of Mescher E. "Junqueira's Histology" textbook. He is the originator, organiser and lecturer of the author's course "Synaptic organisation of the brain" implemented for students majoring in neurobiology at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, SUM.
The Professor's non-professional fascinations include architecture in its broadest sense, painting (surrealism, magic realism and hyperrealism, the works of Edward Hopper), literature, history and philosophy of science. Also American automobiles of the 1950s-60s and the life of hummingbirds and other tropical birds.
