The previous Rector of the Silesian Medical University, Prof. Tomasz Szczepański, was elected for the next term. Voting began shortly after 9 a.m. It lasted until 12 p.m. There were 589 electors eligible to vote. 536 took part in the vote and the turnout was 83 per cent, with 447 voters voting in favour and 24 against. The result is impressive and shows the level of support for the current and future Rector of SUM.
- The result is something to be proud of and we declare our readiness to cooperate," said Prof Katarzyna Mizia - Stec, Vice-Chancellor for Science and International Cooperation, congratulating such emphatic support for Rector Szczepański.
- Today is further motivation for me to work. Thank you very much for your trust. We will do our best to realise our ambitious plans," said Prof Tomasz Szczepański.
Just before voting began, the candidate presented his programme for the coming years. The most important words of his speech were: development of science, investments, internationalisation.
- I would like to thank all my co-workers, thanks to whom these past years can be regarded as successful for the academic community, despite difficulties, for example those related to the pandemic," said Prof. Szczepański.
In his speech, he raised the need to expand international cooperation, but also to improve the standard of teaching rooms and hospital infrastructure. The Rector is very much looking forward to the development of the scholarship programme for Silesia announced by the Minister of Science, Dariusz Wieczorek.
Just before the election, Rector Szczepański visited all the faculties, but first met with representatives of students and doctoral students to listen to their demands and expectations.
From Rector Szczepański's words, it is clear that the term ahead will be largely marked by investment. Among other things, the construction of the long-awaited Silesian Children's Oncology and Haematology Centre in Zabrze will begin, as will the extension of the Upper Silesian Children's Health Centre. In Zabrze, we are facing, among other things, the renovation of the dean's office, and in Sosnowiec the move to modern premises in Jedności Street. The unit for people with special needs will also be expanded. There are also plans to expand the Rectorate by acquiring plots of land and real estate from the former MSWiA Hospital.
- I am sure that without the help of my colleagues, but also the support of my closest ones, our effective work would not be possible," said Rector Szczepański.
