We are pleased to announce that the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice is expanding its support structures for researchers, intensifying activities in the field of intellectual property protection and technology transfer. As of 1 October 2024, the position of Patent Attorney at the University is held by Ms Magdalena Filipek-Marzec.
Strengthening intellectual property protection
- The hiring of a Patent Attorney is a long-awaited step that will significantly strengthen our capabilities in technology transfer and intellectual property protection. I believe that thanks to this, our innovative projects will be better protected and the number of patents filed by our scientists will increase significantly, which will certainly contribute to the further development of our University. I am delighted that we have finally managed to attract such a valuable employee. Thus, we already have a Patent Broker and a Patent Attorney,’ said Professor Edward Wylęgała , Vice-Chancellor for Development and Technology Transfer, who also added: - I invite all scientists and students to cooperate and share their ideas. both with the staff of the ŚUM Technology Transfer Centre.
Tasks of the Patent Attorney
Ms Magdalena Filipek-Marzec, as Patent Attorney, supports SUM researchers in the process of securing intellectual property rights. Her key tasks include:
filing of inventions on behalf of creators with the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland, EPO and WIPO,
advising on industrial property protection,
conducting activities aimed at obtaining protection of property rights,
advising during pending application proceedings and correspondence with patent offices,
drafting documentation, including agreements on co-ownership of patents,
preparing opinions and analyses related to official letters received.
Modern support for researchers
The Patent Attorney does not work alone. Already in August 2023, SUM hired a Technology Broker, Mr Wojciech Borówka, whose task is to support the commercialisation of inventions created at the University. His role includes the identification, analysis and promotion of innovative scientific solutions, cooperation with the business sector and assistance in their implementation in the market.

The SUM Technology Transfer Centre encourages all researchers and students to contact and cooperate with the Patent Attorney and the Technology Broker. Their support is crucial in the process of protecting innovations and commercialising research results.
