Atrial fibrillation is an arrhythmia affecting millions of patients who can be treated with ablation, a procedure called pulmonary vein isolation. Traditionally, heating or cooling is used to achieve the desired effect of blocking abnormal heartbeats. At the Upper Silesian Medical Center Hospital in Ochojiec, a team of doctors from the 1st Department of Cardiology, led by Prof. Dr. Katarzyna Mizia - Stec, has successfully performed three procedures using the brand-new FARAPULSE technology. - The method involves the momentary generation of a therapeutic electric field through a specially constructed catheter inserted into the heart. In a process called irreversible electroporation, the heart tissue to be ablated becomes electrically inactive, while adjacent tissues are spared. This state-of-the-art procedure is short, safe and effective," explains Prof. Dr. Katarzyna Mizia - Stec.
