Natalia Pawlas, MD, PhD with a professorial nomination by the President of the Republic of Poland

By the decision of the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda, dated 8 May 2023. Natalia Pawlas, MD, PhD, Head of the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medical Sciences in Zabrze, was awarded the title of Professor of Medical and Health Sciences, in the discipline of medical sciences.

Prof. Natalia Pawlas graduated in 2003 from the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice, then the Silesian Medical Academy. She also obtained her doctoral degree in medicine from the above Faculty in 2008 on the basis of her dissertation "Effect of arachidonic acid on neurons of the rat cerebral cortex under conditions of an in vitro ischemia model", and she obtained her postdoctoral degree in medical science in the discipline: medicine, specialisation: pharmacology and toxicology, in 2016. at the Faculty of Medicine with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry in Zabrze, SUM Katowice, on the basis of a series of publications under the common title "Environmental exposure of children to lead - health effects and their determinants".

She is a specialist in intensive care (2022), clinical toxicology (2017) and occupational medicine (2013).

From 2007 to 2019, she worked at the Institute of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health in Sosnowiec (Department of Chemical Hazards and Genetic Toxicology, where she was Head of the Genetic Toxicology Laboratory), as well as at the Regional Acute Poisoning Centre with the Clinical Toxicology Unit.

Since October 2016, she has been Head of the Department of Pharmacology at the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Zabrze, SUM Katowice. Since June 2019, he has also worked in the Department of Toxicology at the St. Barbara Regional Specialist Hospital No. 5 in Sosnowiec.

In addition, she is a Provincial Consultant in clinical toxicology and a member of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Occupational Medicine in Łódź.

She was appointed to the Committee of Physiological and Pharmacological Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences for the term 2020-2023. She is a member of, among others, the Polish Society of Pharmacology (currently Chair of the Board of the Silesian Branch), the Polish Society of Toxicology, and the International Commission on Occupational Health (currently Chair of the Scientific Committee on Toxicology of Metals).

Prof. Natalia Pawlas's scientific output includes 109 original and review publications with a total Impact Factor of 1173.991 and MNiSW score of 3868; Hirsh index 17 (Web of Science).

She has participated as principal investigator in the project PHIME - Public health impact of long-term, low-Ievel mixed element exposure in susceptible population strata, funded under the 6th European Union Framework Programme FOOD-CT-2006-016253 and two other projects under the 5th Framework Programme (NOISECHEM, EMECAP). She was the head of the NCN grant "Mechanisms of lead toxicity from a molecular biology perspective" (UMO- 2011/03/D/NZ7/05018) and principal investigator in 3 other projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, NCN and NCBiR.

As part of her teaching activities, she teaches the subject "Pharmacology and Toxicology" to students of medicine, medicine-dentistry and emergency medicine. Within the CMKP, she also teaches courses in clinical toxicology for those specialising in the internal medicine module, in anaesthesiology and intensive care and family medicine. She has twice been an assistant supervisor and twice a supervisor in completed doctoral dissertations. She has served as a reviewer in 5 doctoral and one postdoctoral proceedings

Awarded several times with team scientific prizes of I and II degree and organisational and didactic prize of JM Rector of Medical University of Silesia in Katowice.
