A one-day course on "Basics of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology", combined with live research presentations, was held on 28.04.2023 in the A3 Auditorium of Prof. W Zahorski, 18 Medyków Street, SUM Katowice. The course was organized under the auspices of the Silesian Medical University by members of the Ultrasonography Section of the Polish Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians. The course was aimed at final-year students of the Faculty of Medical Sciences as well as the Faculty of Health Sciences, young doctors and midwives. The course was free of charge.
The turnout of participants exceeded the wildest expectations of the organizers of the venture because it was attended by about 300 participants, mainly SUM students. Interest in the topic was enormous, at times the hall was short of free seats. Despite the not the best time , because Friday and the beginning of a long weekend, by the end of the day (the course lasted from 9 am to 6 pm) almost 80 percent of participants remained in the hall.
It seems that the live studies, with full explanations during the course, were particularly appreciated.
The first part of the day presented the basics of imaging in pregnancy, basic scans in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy in conjunction with risk factors for fetal genetic defects, and including what is most important, the evaluation of fetal heart anatomy and function.
In the second part of the day, basic images related to subsequent observations during a woman's menstrual cycle related to her fertility were presented. Then the basic pathologies related to a woman's reproductive organs were presented. Finally, management options for specific clinical situations were discussed, especially those most frequently encountered by general practitioners working in outpatient clinics, EDs and hospital emergency rooms.
The course was conducted by three experienced gynecologists/obstetricians, members of the Ultrasonography Section of the Polish Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians.
