First graduates of the SUM Doctoral School

We are proud to announce that the first six doctoral degrees have been conferred as part of the training at the SUM Doctoral School. A ceremonial meeting with the graduates was held on Thursday, February 15, in the Senate Room of the Silesian Medical University in Katowice. 

–  A doctoral degree is a prelude to an academic career. It is the most important element that determines further development. I am proud that these young and ambitious people have gone through the entire cycle of training at the Doctoral School, obtained a positive mid-term evaluation, prepared their dissertations and received their doctoral degrees – said Prof. Dr. Katarzyna Mizia-Stec, Vice-Rector for Science and International Cooperation, adding: –  I keep my fingers firmly crossed for your further development. Of course, I also hope that you will continue to be associated with our University. I would also like every subsequent doctoral degree conferral to look like this meeting today and be a kind of celebration of the University. 

– Dear Doctoral Students, may this ceremony be a moment not only of the end of one stage of your scientific journey, but also the beginning of new opportunities and challenges. It is a moment that symbolizes your extraordinary perseverance, determination and passion in scientific research – said Prof. Agata Stanek, Director of the SUM Doctoral School, who also emphasized that the doctoral dissertations defended by graduates are not only the result of individual effort, but also the fruit of the support of mentors: – Thank you Dear Promoters and Assistant Promoters for your commitment and support, which made this moment possible.

The graduates of the SUM Doctoral School were also congratulated by Dr. Justyna Misiak, SUM's Vice Chancellor for Research Activities.

The first person to receive a doctoral degree is Ms. Magdalena Latos, whose thesis topic was as follows:"Bronchoscopic interventions in lung recipients for end-stage respiratory failure in the course of cystic fibrosis". The promoter was Marek Ochman, MD, and the associate promoter was Miroslaw Nęcki, MD. 

Doctoral degrees were also awarded to:

  • Ms. Dominika Szkodny, pursuing training at the SUM Doctoral School within the framework of the Implementation Doctorate program.

The topic: "Improvement of the Eye Tissue Bank in the field of obtaining potential corneal donors", supervisor: Prof. Edward Wylęgała, MD, PhD, assistant supervisor: Ewa Wróblewska-Czajka, MD.

  • Ms. Joanna Fojcik in the discipline of health sciences  

Topic: "The impact of health education on the quality of life of patients of closed wards of forensic psychiatry" Supervisor: Prof. Marek Krzystanek, MD, PhD.

  • Ms. Joanna Smolarczyk in the discipline of medical science 

Topic: "The effect of psychiatric day rehabilitation on the reduction of depressive and anxiety symptoms and quality of life in patients with mental disorders" supervisor: Prof. Robert Pudlo, MD, SUM, assistant supervisor: Paweł Dębski, MD.

  • Mr. Tomasz Jurys in the discipline of health sciences 

Topic: "Assessment of the quality of life of men treated surgically for prostate cancer", supervisor: Jacek Durmala, MD, PhD, assistant supervisor: Bartłomiej Burzyński, MD.

  • Ms. Paulina Majek in the discipline of medical science 

Topic: "Early effects on the functional status of the airways respiratory and cardiovascular systems in the use of tobacco heating systems", supervisor: Prof. Dr. Grzegorz Brożek, M.D., Ph.

The SUM Doctoral School began its activities on October 1, 2019 and is the largest Doctoral School among Medical Universities in Poland.In the first year of the School's operation, 86 doctoral students began their training of which 63 in medical sciences, 18 in health sciences and 5 in pharmaceutical sciences. Currently, 321 doctoral students are being educated at the SUM Doctoral School. As of 2023, 15 doctoral students have submitted their dissertations, of which six doctoral degrees have been conferred to date. 

We wish all graduates of the SUM Doctoral School further scientific success, and we congratulate the supervisors and assistant supervisors for their commitment and effort in training young scientists
