Doctor Stanisław Surma, a 2023 graduate of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice SUM, received an honourable mention and the Dr Wacław Mayzel Medical Laurel medal, awarded by the Polish Academy of Sciences, Faculty V of Medical Sciences, for co-authoring a publication entitled. "Coffee or Tea: Anti-inflammatory Properties in the Context of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Prevention". The award ceremony took place in Warsaw. Stanisław Surma is a member of the scientific circle at the Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology of the ŚUM led by Prof. Bogusław Okopień.
Wacław Mayzel was a Polish physician-histologist who was the first to describe the process of mitosis in animal cells. The highly prestigious prize named after him has been awarded by the Polish Academy of Sciences since 1998.
It is also worth mentioning that Stanisław Surma also received the First PoLA Most Recognised Young Lipidologist Award 2023, which was awarded on 15 December 2023 during the 13th Congress of the Polish Lipidological Society in Łódź.
