Appointments to the positions of head of SUM units

We are pleased to inform you that during the last meeting of the Senate of the Silesian Medical University in Katowice, Prof. Tomasz Szczepanski, MD, PhD, Rector of the SUM, handed out appointments to three employees of our University as managers.

Prof. dr. hab. n. med. and n. o zdr. Iwona Maruniak-Chudek received an appointment as Head of the Department of Neonatology, Neonatal Intensive Care of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice.

Prof. Iwona Maruniak-Chudek - pediatrician and neonatologist specialist. Graduate of the Faculty of Medicine of the Silesian Medical Academy in Katowice. Since 2009, head of the Department of Neonatology and Neonatal Intensive Care (previous name: Department of Neonatal Intensive Care and Pathology) of the Upper Silesian Children's Health Center, Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice, Silesian Medical University in Katowice; since autumn 2022, also head of the Department of Neonatology of the WNMK SUM. Provincial consultant for neonatology in Silesia, member of the National Supervision for Neonatology. Board member of the Polish Society of Neonatology. Director and instructor of the European Resuscitation Council - NLS (Neonatal Life Support), member of the National Examination Committee of the CEM. Author and co-author, among others, of scientific articles on topics such as infections in newborns, metabolic disorders and acute kidney injury.

The department run by Prof. Maruniak-Chudek diagnoses and treats newborns admitted from all over the province and the country. The range of medical services, which is carried out in close cooperation with other departments of the NICU, covers the full spectrum of pathologies of the neonatal period, including extreme prematurity, congenital malformations (including: congenital heart defects), genetic disorders, neonatal encephalopathy, severe respiratory pathologies, and rare diseases. The location of the Clinic and NICU in a multispecialty pediatric center allows for comprehensive medical care, which is continued after hospitalization in the clinic's Neonatology and Neonatal Pathology Outpatient Clinic. In the coming years, the Clinic and Department will focus on expanding post-graduate teaching activities (specialized and in-service courses) and will introduce a new pre-graduate training program for fifth-year students of the Faculty of Medical Sciences and English-speaking European Division students. Research and teaching cooperation with Polish and European academic and medical units will also continue.

Prof. Jerzy Stojko, MD, has been appointed Head of the Department of Toxicology and Bioanalysis of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Sosnowiec, Poland.

Prof. Jerzy Stojko - Vice-Rector for Student Affairs of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice. Head of the Department of Toxicology and Bioanalysis of the Faculty of Pharmacy with the Department of Laboratory Medicine in Sosnowiec SUM in Katowice, also associated with the SUM Center for Experimental Medicine. Prof. Jerzy Stojko's main scientific interests include the toxicological chemical purity of dietary supplements and herbal raw materials, the toxicological evaluation of the effects of standardized extracts of bee products in terms of the safety of their use. On a daily basis, he conducts lectures, seminars and exercises in subjects including pharmacoepidemiology, toxicology, hygiene, psychoactive substances, genetically modified animals in biotechnology, apifarmacotherapy and apitoxin therapy for students of pharmacy, medical analytics, medical biotechnology and cosmetology. In 2021, he was awarded the Medal of the National Education Commission. He is also a multiple recipient of awards from the JM Rector of SUM.

Prof. Marek Hartleb, MD, has been appointed Head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice, Poland.

Prof. Marek Hartleb - a specialist in gastroenterology, deals in particular with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the liver and biliary tract. He has been associated with the Department of Gastroenterology since 1981. He is a two-time Chairman of the Silesian Branch of the Polish Society of Gastroenterology (2001-2014 and 2018-2021) and Chairman of the Hepatology Section of the Polish Society of Gastroenterology (2016-2021). Since 2021. President of the Polish Society of Gastroenterology. Participated in the work of the Senate Committees on Scientific and Teaching Staff Development (1998-2000), Budgetary Affairs (1999-2001), Scientific Affairs (since 2006) and currently the Committee on Clinical Base. Member of the Social Council of the John Paul Hospital. In his scientific and research activities, he mainly focuses on hepatology, especially on systemic and visceral hemodynamic disorders in cirrhosis, metabolic and autoimmune diseases of the liver, and hepato-gastroenterological casuistry. He did his scientific internship and training at, among others, the Visceral Hemodynamics Laboratory of the Beaujon Clichy Hospital in Paris (1992-1993). He has about 450 papers published in national and international journals (IF = 281.776; MNiSW = 5455; Hirsch Index 23). He is the supervisor of 9 doctoral dissertations. He is a member of the European Society of Hepatology-EASL and the Polish Society of Gastroenterology (since 1993). Honored with, among others: Silver Cross of Merit, the badge "For exemplary work in health care" and the Diploma of the 50th anniversary of ŚAM. Recipient of first and second degree awards from the Rector of ŚAM/SUM for scientific and teaching activities, Thesis entitled. "Vascular hyporesponsiveness to endothelin-1 in rats with cirrhosis" was awarded by the editorial committee of the journal Hepatology (1995).
