Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of young adults that currently affects nearly 52,000 people in Poland. MS has a woman's face, as it affects the female sex 3 times more often. Until recently, MS was considered the most common non-traumatic cause of disability in young people. And is it still?

Over the past few years, an extraordinary amount has changed in the treatment options for MS, but also in the perception and understanding of the disease itself. A big step forward was made with the introduction of changes in the new drug program from last November, which guaranteed us access to therapies that are highly effective at an early stage of the disease, even from the moment of diagnosis.

- It also included drugs for patients with the secondary progressive active form of multiple sclerosis, for which we previously had no treatment. "Undoubtedly, thanks to the changes in the new drug program, great progress has been made in the treatment of MS and we can personalize this therapy, that is, 'tailor-made' for the individual patient," says Professor Monika Adamczyk, MD, PhD. o zdr. Monika Adamczyk-Sowa Head of the Department of Neurology at SUM ( Faculty of Medical Sciences in Zabrze ), president of the Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology Section of the Polish Neurological Society.

Today, MS is already an absolutely different disease entity than it was even five years ago. In addition to therapy in the escalation model, we have gained access to high-efficacy therapies, which has allowed us to make a quantum leap in the treatment options for this incurable disease.
