Prof. dr. hab. n. med. and n. o zdr. Katarzyna Beata Komosinska-Vassev from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Sosnowiec has been awarded the Silesian Scientific Award 2023. This is not the only success we can boast of! Anna Brzęk, MD, Prof. SUM, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences in Katowice, received the Special Award of the Mayor of the City of Katowice. The Chair of the Silesian Science Award Chapter, which presented all the awards during yesterday's gala, is Prof. Katarzyna Mizia- Stec, SUM's Vice-Chancellor for Science and International Cooperation.
The gala, during which the winners were selected and the statuettes were handed out, took place on Sunday, December 10, at the International Congress Center in Katowice. The Silesian Science Prize is awarded by the universities co-organizing the Silesian Science Festival to individuals who significantly contribute to the development of science and present outstanding artistic achievements, as well as promote Silesian science on the national and international arena. It can be awarded for a lifetime of achievements or for achievements achieved in the two years preceding the year in which the award is presented. This prestigious award is given in three categories: employee, doctoral student and special award of the Mayor of Katowice.
Among the representatives of the Silesian Medical University in Katowice - in the employee category - were nominated:
- Ph.D., M.D. and n.o zdr. Katarzyna Beata Komosińska-Vassev
- dr. n. pharm. Aldona Minecka, Department of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Sosnowiec, Poland
- Prof. Wojciech Pluskiewicz, MD, Department of Internal Medicine, Diabetology and Nephrology - Department of Metabolic Bone Diseases, Faculty of Medical Sciences in Zabrze.
In the doctoral student category, among the nominees was Dr.Aleksandra Gladys, a graduate of SUM, who, among others, has already been included in the honorable group of "Forbes 25 under 25" (a prestigious competition aimed at selecting the most talented young people in Poland). Doctor Aleksandra Gladys is also active in the "Pole in Medicine" Foundation.
In the category of special award of the Mayor of Katowice, Dr. Anna Brzęk, Prof. SUM, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences in Katowice, was nominated, and finally awarded the aforementioned statuette.
Two additional awards were presented this year. The Award of Merit to Silesian Science was given to the Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship, Jakub Chełstowski, and a special award for activities for the development of Silesian science went to the director of the Silesian Planetarium, Stefan Janta.
This year's gala was unique, as Katowice was awarded the title of European City of Science and it was within the framework of the celebration that, among other things, the winners of the Silesian Science Prize 2023 were honored.
