The Faculty of Health Sciences (formerly the School of Public Health) was established following Resolution No. 148/2001 of the 28th March, 2001 of the Senate of the Silesian Medical Academy in Katowice (now the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice). The concept, the educational goals and the structure of the organization were developed by the Senate Organization Committee of the Public Health Department headed by Professor Jan E. Zejda, MD PhD appointed by the Rector of the Medical University of Silesia as the Rector's Proxy for Organization of the Public Health Department.
The Faculty commenced independent activities on the 1st October 2002, offering the students programs in public health, dietetics and emergency medicine. Today the School holds academic programs in dietetics, public health and health risk management.
The founder of the Faculty and the first Dean during the term 2002-2005 was Prof. Jan E. Zejda, MD PhD, followed in 2005 by Krystyn Sosada, MD, PhD. The following Dean during the term 2005-2012 term was Prof. Małgorzata Muc-Wierzgoń MD, PhD. In the years 2012-2020 this function was performed by Prof. Elżbieta Grochowska-Niedworok, PhD. Currently the position of Dean is held by Prof. Sebastian Grosicki, PhD.
