Public Health - Second-cycle studies - 2 years (4 semesters)


The aim of the programs is to prepare a public health employee who, based on the acquired interdisciplinary knowledge, skills and social competence, will be able accomplish tasks related to recognition of major health threats, its protection and strengthening in healthcare institutions, state administration at all levels, local governments, universities, scientific and research institutes, as well as large industrial plants. The evolution of demands in the area of public health means that the potential scope of a graduate's activity should meet requirements shaped by the modern concept of public health in Poland and the EU member states.

The second-cycle public health studies are addressed to first-cycle graduates. During the second cycle studies a graduate receives extended, interdisciplinary knowledge in the field of social and medical sciences. This orientation provides the graduates with tools necessary to solve effectively diverse public health problems.

Particular emphasis is put on analytical skills, including identification of dependencies and conditions which affect the health of individuals and communities as related to demographic, economic, cultural and epidemiological changes occurring in the surrounding environment and the graduate's ability to manage them efficiently. A student may choose one of the following specializations:

1. occupational health and safety,

2. health educator,

3. epidemiology and biostatistics - extended program,

4. organization and management in healthcare,

5. global public health,

6. environmental health

7. environmental health and prevention of environmental diseases,

8. specialist rescue,

9. human nutrition and food safety.

 

Specialization: occupational health and safety

A graduate of the occupational health and safety specialization:

a. has the knowledge of:

1. legal grounds for organization and operation of the State Sanitary Inspection, especially in the field of sanitary supervision, hygiene and sanitary requirements for public facilities, workplaces, schools, including also municipal hygiene, monitoring systems and radiation hygiene arising from the Atomic Law Act,

2. physiology and changes taking place in the human body to allow for the design and ergonomic modification of workplaces.

b. has skills in :

1. practical use of empirical formulae and specialized equipment for assessment of the environmental impact on human body,

2. determination of the conditions and design of ergonomic dimensions of the workplace and conditions for practice various forms of physical activity.

c. has social competence to:

1. take executive positions and perform tasks related to occupational health protection,

2. carry out comprehensive supervision of working conditions in various institutions and units, including multivariate and integrated assessment of exposure to harmful and dangerous factors at the workplace,

3. preparation and implementation of employee training programs on proper performance of professional activities at the workplace, including the use of personal protective equipment,

4. manage workplace risks and implement measures to improve the working conditions,

5. prepare research and teaching programs in research institutes and universities implementing educational and scientific projects in this area.

 

Specialization: health educator

A graduate of the health educator specialization:

a. has the knowledge of:

1. modifiable risk factors for chronic diseases,

2. mother and child health protection and oral health promotion,

3. communication methods to conduct health education at individual and collective level, behavioral techniques leading to changes in health behavior, communication of health risk and health risk management,

4. types of prevention, development of health programs and social campaigns in this area, knowledge of the principles of evaluation of health programs,

5. knowledge of basic information technologies used in healthcare.

b. has skills in:

1. conducting health education at individual and population level,

2. communication with a patient or specific population to change the health behaviors,

3. developing, implementing and evaluating health programs,

4. the use of basic IT technologies in healthcare.

c. has social competence to:

1. participate in the therapeutic process, especially in primary and preventive healthcare,

2. accomplishment of health programs,

3. application of basic IT technologies in healthcare.

 

Specialization: epidemiology and biostatistics - extended program

A graduate of the extended program in epidemiology and biostatistics:

a. has the knowledge of:

1. mutual relations between health and socio-economic factors, has knowledge and is able to recognize threats to the population health related to lifestyle, social environment, socio-cultural conditions and other factors related to social threats to the population's health,

2. basic health problems of the population and various population groups, as well as principles of designing and conducting diagnostic and preventive tests in order to describe them and prevent their negative effects, including multi-center studies,

3. basic epidemiological and legal conditions for the operation of healthcare establishments,

4. types of medical documentation and legal grounds for documenting of the specified incidents and phenomena in the area of public health, understands the relationships and mutual relations between epidemiology and health policy.

b. has skills in :

1. preparation of research projects based on verified sources of information and the concept of creating evidence-based medicine, using theoretical knowledge as well as perceived and correctly interpreted phenomena,

2. work in an interdisciplinary team to solve a selected problem in the field of public health and to formulate correct conclusions and present results of the research in the form of a self-prepared presentation.

c. has social competence to:

1. carry out multi-faceted monitoring of the population health status,

2. prepare to carry out research and teaching programs in research institutes and universities implementing projects in the field of epidemiology,

3. take on analytical and research positions in all public administration bodies related to health policy, public and private healthcare, in organizations and foundations dealing with the public health ,

4. manage databases of healthcare establishments and institutions acting on their behalf.

 

Specialization: organization and management in healthcare

A graduate of the organization and management in healthcare specialization:

a. has the knowledge of:

1. economic processes, methods of economic analysis used in healthcare, identification of factors affecting strategies of healthcare units and the principles of creating a business plan for an entity operating in the field of healthcare,

2. priorities of the state health policy based on the National Health Program, the role of key participants in the decision-making process in the area of social and health policy,

3. the grounds of constitutional, administrative, civil, labor and medical law and the European Union legal system in the field of the patient's rights.

b. has skills in:

1. analyzing data on socio-economic phenomena having a direct or indirect impact on the health of a population, critically assesses major trends and projects in public health and health promotion in the local and nationwide context,

2. independent analysis of economic phenomena occurring in the area of public health, and the determinants of the market activity of a healthcare establishment, using appropriate tools.

3. assessment of marketing strategies and criteria of quality management systems used by healthcare units, combined with elements of human resources management,

4. indication of supporting institutions for groups at risk of social exclusion (disabled people, the poor, ethnic minorities), as well as the principles of managing them, planning action strategies and financing.

c. has social competence to:

1. administer and organize work in healthcare institutions, including healthcare companies, sanitary and epidemiological supervision, social and health insurers, National Health Fund, and to initiate and implement organizational and management projects,

2. ensure effective cooperation with mass media, local communities, NGOs and institutions responsible for regional management,

3. analyze the accounting data and apply techniques of financial analysis,

4. undertake marketing activities in healthcare and in the area of social communication,

5. work in research institutes and universities carrying out research and teaching programs in this area.

 

Specialization: global public health

A graduate of the global public health specialization:

a. has the knowledge of:

1. social policy and knows its ideological assumptions, defines relationship between political and historical conditions in a given country,

2. differentiation of the mechanisms of operation of key institutions in the insurance, budget and residual model,

3. the basic aspects of operation of healthcare systems worldwide, at all organizational levels as well as management, planning and financing mechanisms,

4. constitutional, administrative, civil and labor law as well as valid legal regulations in the healthcare system, insurance organizations and supervisory bodies,

5. the basic mechanisms of organization and provision of health services, knows how to define legal guarantees for citizen access to healthcare, knows the basics of payer institutions and authorities at central and local level in Poland.

b. has skills in :

1. analyzing selected effectiveness mechanisms of health systems at the macroeconomic and microeconomic levels, critically assesses the main trends and projects in public health and health promotion in the local and national context, and in a broader European and global perspective,

2. description of the main global and European strategies in the field of public health, recognizes the role of non-governmental organizations in implementation of international health activities, knows how to assess the impact of global health determinants on the health status in Poland,

3. analyzing literature related to international strategies for public health, describes the most important environmental threats of the 21st century, their impact on the state of health of the population and ways of preventing them, undertaken by international communities,

4. skillful use of theoretical knowledge, perceives and interprets phenomena in the field of population health, deepened and enriched by explanation of mutual relations between health and the socio-economic factors.

c. has social competence to:

1. take executive positions and carry out tasks of state and local government and non-governmental institutions as well as social and private organizations operating in the broadly understood healthcare system,

2. ensure initiation and implementation of projects to promote health and health education, social assistance and supervision over implementation of the statutory tasks of such bodies,

3. take position of an expert, consultant in the field of public health, providing services to all institutions of the national and transnational economy,

4. work in task teams implementing projects in the field of health policy, health promotion and health education, by finding and implementing innovative solutions developed individually or in a team,

5. work in research institutes and universities carrying out research and teaching programs in this area.

 

Specialization: environmental health

A graduate of the environmental health specialization:

a. has the knowledge of:

1. environmental threats in the 21st century, their impact on the state of health of the population, and preventive measures taken by international communities,

2. national and international actions taken in the field of natural protection, and knows and discusses examples of environmental prevention programs and application opportunities in selected social groups

3. national and international activities regarding the legal grounds for the use and production of GMOs

4. identification of environmental health threats, and is able to indicate the most important threats occurring in the place of residence, as well as on a regional, national, European and global scale,

5. cause and effect relationships between the population exposure to negative environmental factors, and their health, as well as assessment of the population exposure to such factors, including the health risk,

b. has skills in:

1. initiating actions to increase public awareness in the field of environmental health, is able to propose to social groups recommendations for prevention of environmental health threats, aimed at effective reduction of exposure to adverse environmental factors,

2. independent search and interpretation of data from Polish and international publications and documents regarding the state of the environment, design and conduct of research using the laboratory equipment to assess pollution of individual elements of the environment, and presentation of results in the form of a scientific report,

3. the use of theoretical knowledge, observation and interpretation of phenomena concerning the health of the population, deepened and enriched by clarifying mutual relationship between health and the socio-economic factors, recognizes the opportunities and threats arising from introduction of GMOs to the market,

4. critical assessment of leading trends and projects in the field of public health and health promotion, in local and national context and in a broader European perspective.

c. has social competence to:

1. ensure cooperation in international and interdisciplinary teams in the field of environmental health

2. solve problems in the area of public health within the scope relevant to the specialization,

3. disseminate knowledge among selected social groups, create and shape their awareness of opportunities of health risk management,

4. identify precisely the problems in the field of environmental health threats,

5. ensure elimination and reduction of exposure of a population to harmful environmental factors,

6. work in research institutes and universities carrying out research and teaching programs in this area.

 

Specialization: environmental health and prevention of environmentally dependent diseases

A graduate of the environmental health and prevention of environmentally dependent diseases specialization:

a. has the knowledge of:

1. environmental health threats in the 21st century,

2. health risk factors identified and defined by science and occurring in the human habitat,

3. cause and effect relationships between exposure to negative environmental factors and the health status of a population.

b. has skills in:

1. the use of theoretical knowledge, observation and interpretation of phenomena concerning the health of the population, deepened and enriched by clarifying mutual relationship between health and environmental health risk factors.

2. developing preventive programs, including those based on primary prevention, affecting the entire population or a significant part of it, and covering the earliest actions aimed at preventing disease or reducing the risk of development.

c. has social competence to:

1. ensure application of environmental prevention programs in selected social groups

 

A graduate showing the acquired knowledge and may seek employment in:

· Local and Regional Sanitary and Epidemiological Stations.

· Healthcare establishments (primary and secondary health care).

· Educational boards and other educational institutions.

· The State Sanitary Inspection.

· State Inspectorate for Environmental Protection.

· Public administration supervising the work of health and environment protection bodies.

· Administrative bodies carrying out preventive programs.

· Research institutes.

 

Specialization: specialist rescue

A graduate of specialist rescue specialization:

a. has the knowledge of:

1. pathophysiology of emergencies in selected states of life and health threat in specialized fields of rescue conditioned by different risk factors at the place of rescue operations

2. the use of basic information technologies used in healthcare

b. has skills in :

1. conducting specialist rescue operations at individual and tactical levels,

2. organizing first aid points and medical segregation,

3. communicate with the patient in specific life-threatening situations to limit existing injuries and avoidable injuries as a result of irrational behavior of their participants and rescuers

4. crisis management

c. has social competence to:

1. cooperate in an operational group,

2. communicate between types of services and emergency notification centers, developing on-site strategies, in accordance valid provisions of law and with the use of IT technology.

 

A graduate showing the acquired knowledge and skills may seek employment in:

· Organizational units of the Medical Emergency at the local and regional level.

· Bodies of the regional and central level.

· Specialist and basic mountain and water rescue groups

· Public administration bodies (Crisis management centers) in which the needs of services are estimated and the strategy of rescue operations determined, and programs for their monitoring and evaluation are developed.

 

Specialization: human nutrition and food safety

A graduate of human nutrition and food safety specialization:

a. has the knowledge of:

1. food safety and nutrition, and food quality control

2. nutrition rules for various population groups of the, including people with nutritional diseases,

3. the use of functional foods, dietary supplements and special-purpose foods,

4. health and psychosocial effects of conventional and unconventional diets,

5. rules for management of teams operating within the food and nutrition sector,

6. the basics of developing forms of individual entrepreneurship and marketing, and consumer rights,

7. principles of organizing work in plants operating in the sector of human nutrition and food safety.

b. has skills in:

1. work in analytical laboratories and research institutes responsible for assessment of food products in physico-chemical, biological and sensory terms,

2. providing instructions food manufacturers regarding organization of work stations and compliance with the principles of good hygiene, production and laboratory practice,

3. carrying out training programs in human nutrition and food safety,

4. developing clear and explicit instructions for personnel performing tasks in the field of human nutrition and food quality control,

5. organization, operation and management of a company, including participation in preparation of documentation for implementation of health food quality assurance systems.

c. has social to:

1. continue working life-long education to update the professional knowledge and skills,

2. manage a team implementing tasks in the field of food safety, consumer rights, nutritional education as well as prevention and treatment of diseases related to improper nutrition,

3. comply with professional secrecy and the patient's rights, including the right to reliable information on proposed nutritional procedures.

 

A graduate showing the acquired knowledge and skills may seek employment in

· public and private institutions involved in food production and / or quality control;

· analytical laboratories dealing with food evaluation;

· sanitary and epidemiological stations, including departments for food, nutrition and utilities;

· supervisory bodies and organizations ensuring compliance with legal requirements for food safety and human nutrition (Veterinary Inspection, Trade Inspection)

Specialization: specialist rescue

 

A graduate of specialist rescue specialization:

 

a.       has the knowledge of:

 

1.       pathophysiology of emergencies in selected states of life and health threat in specialized fields of rescue conditioned by different risk factors at the place of rescue operations

2.       the use of basic information technologies used in healthcare

 

b.      has skills in :

1.       conducting specialist rescue operations at individual and tactical levels,

2.       organizing first aid points and medical segregation,

3.       communicate with the patient in specific life-threatening situations to limit existing injuries and avoidable injuries as a result of irrational behavior of their participants and rescuers

4.       crisis management

 

c.       has social competence to:

 

1.       cooperate in an operational group,

2.       communicate between types of services and emergency notification centers, developing on-site strategies, in accordance valid provisions of law and with the use of IT technology.

 

A graduate showing the acquired knowledge and skills may seek employment in:

 

·         Organizational units of the Medical Emergency at the local and regional level.

·         Bodies of the regional and central level.

·         Specialist and basic mountain and water rescue groups

·         Public administration bodies (Crisis management centers) in which the needs of services are estimated and the strategy of rescue operations determined, and programs for their monitoring and evaluation are developed.

 

Specialization: human nutrition and food safety
 

A graduate of human nutrition and food safety specialization:

 

a.       has  the knowledge of:

 

1.       food safety and nutrition, and food quality control
2.       nutrition rules for various population groups of the, including people with nutritional diseases,
3.       the use of functional foods, dietary supplements and special-purpose foods,
4.       health and psychosocial effects of conventional and unconventional diets,
5.       rules for management of teams operating within the food and nutrition sector,
6.       the basics of developing forms of individual entrepreneurship and marketing, and consumer rights,
7.       principles of organizing work in plants operating in the sector of human nutrition and food safety.

 

b.      has skills in:

 

1.       work in analytical laboratories and research institutes responsible for  assessment of food products in physico-chemical, biological and sensory terms,
2.       providing instructions food manufacturers regarding organization of work stations and compliance with the principles of good hygiene, production and laboratory practice,
3.       carrying out training programs in human nutrition and food safety,
4.       developing clear and explicit instructions for personnel performing tasks in the field of human nutrition and food quality control,
5.       organization, operation and management of a company, including participation in preparation of documentation for implementation of health food quality assurance systems.
 
c.       has social to:
 
1.       continue  working life-long education to  update the professional knowledge and skills,
2.       manage a team implementing tasks in the field of food safety, consumer rights, nutritional education as well as prevention and treatment of diseases related to improper nutrition,
3.       comply with professional secrecy and the patient's rights, including the right to reliable information on proposed nutritional procedures.

 

A graduate showing the acquired knowledge and skills may seek employment in

 

·         public and private institutions involved in food production and / or quality control;
·         analytical laboratories dealing with food evaluation;
·         sanitary and epidemiological stations, including departments for food, nutrition and utilities;
